Exploring TAG

Icons blockAt the moment, exploring TAG, the Toronto to Algonquin Greenway can be as easy as a stroll in the park, or as challenging as four days and nights canoe tripping in Algonquin Park. The rail trails are all flat, but come in a variety of trail surface conditions. You cannot accidentally wander off a rail trail once you’re on it, but it can be confusing to navigate in and out of the towns they pass through. Keep in mind there is no TAG signage yet. There can be long remote stretches without access to drinking water, food, picnic tables, benches, or shelter from inclement weather. Accommodation options are inconsistent. The hiking trails we suggest range dramatically in upkeep, signage and mapping, local club activities, organized events or possible guided outings. The canoeing / kayaking options ranges from novice to “experience recommended”.

The Greenway today is still at the concept stage – linking existing parks and heritage paddling routes, hiking paths and bike trails. Each is individually owned and managed separately from this project. The TAG project will encourage communities along the way to offer a consistent level of visitor experience to Greenway travellers. But they need to realize the value of this new market.

You can help with this. When you’re visiting a restaurant or shop – mention that you’ve travelled to their town because of the Toronto to Algonquin Greenway. Tell them where you’re from and what impressions you’ll be sharing back home. Be positive and encouraging about their community or business embracing the TAG concept.

As this website develops, we’ll steadily be offering more detailed information. But we know you’ll be able to venture out and find your own TAG line – your own adventures of discovery. Along the Greenway you will find railway history, artists’ studios, bakeries and bookshops, galleries and museums. With a little advance planning – or maybe by chance – you’ll enjoy festivals, markets, concerts and live theatre. It’s worth it. You will find joy and unexpected surprises.

There’s a rhythm to the Greenway that weaves you in and out of quiet wildlife settings and bustling little towns. The rewards justify the uncertainty of venturing out into a new set of experiences.

Don’t be shy. Please let us know what you found in creating your own TAG line.
