This Draft-in-progress is the first in a series of TAG Town profiles. There are 30 communities (some quite tiny) along TAG.
Haliburton Village is one of the two larger communities (Minden being the other) within Haliburton County. There is no large urban entity in the County. Haliburton Village has a population of less than 1000. Since it’s where the Toronto to Algonquin Greenway (TAG) concept was first imagined, it’s easy to begin sketching out the TAG Town model here. As the program rolls out, other communities will receive the same attention.
Arts, Culture, Heritage:
Haliburton Village is home to Haliburton School of The Arts, formerly home to Dusk Dances – yes, sadly 2014 was the final season, Highlands Opera Studio and Summer Festival, the County Folk Society, Those Other Movies and HIFF, the Haliburton International Film Festival, Razzamataz children’s performing arts series, Rails End Gallery and Arts Centre and its annual “Art n the Park” – Highlands Art and Craft Festival, Ethel Curry Gallery, Haliburton County Studio Tour, Haliburton Museum, and our world-famous Sculpture Forest. One of the few remaining heritage buildings in town was the Heritage House Cafe and B&B currently (November 2014) operating as the Old Meets New Cafe.
Hike Bike Paddle:
The Head Lake Trail is a 5 – 6 km loop to hike or bike. It connects to other village pathways. June is Bike Month and festivities and guided rides vary from year to year. There’s a kayak shop on the main street. Bike repairs are available at a sports shop a few doors down. Head Lake is home to the annual summer camp canoe challenge, and a dragon boat club. Dysart et al municipality recreational coordinator offers a series of free public walking, running activities.
TAG and Town connections:
TAG Zone 8 comes right into town along the Haliburton County Rail Trail to the Rails End Gallery and waterfront municipal park. There is no signage from the trail to welcome travellers into town. This is something the TAG Towns initiative will address.
